He took lessons from the noted teachers of his time in the early ages. He was very resolute and perseverant. He appointed the noted personalities to the important dignitaries in the government. As a first operation, after his accession, Patrona Khalil and his Greek supporter Janaki, and ten thousand of those who supported him were put to death. He had a very eminent personality. He wrote poems under the pen-name of "Sebkatee" and in addittion to his poems he made out very valuable composes.
During his reign, he replaced many a Grand-Viziers one after another. In 1750. a big fire broke out and next an earthquake occurred: as a consequence of those disasters, most of the great mosques of Stanboul were damaged, but Mahmoud the First had them restored immediately. He himself paid for the damage expenses o
restoration of the buildings burnt up in the fire; and having them built, he gave all of them to their owners.
He started a war with the German Empire in 1737. In 1730, Belgrade Treaty was concluded, and Belgrade was gained. Iranian powers were routed. In 1736, the Pacification of Islambol was made with Persia, but, after that agreement, Iranians took a lot of places back, and at last, the warfare ended by a treaty in 1746. According to the treaty, the Persian Empire gave the places which she occupied back to the Othmanlis. Their offer for being confirmed of the Djapheree Sect was strictly rejected by the Ottoman Empire.
The eminent savants and the translator of the Alektoobati Shereefe (Sacred Letters), Mustakiym-zade Suleiman Saad-ud-Din Effendi, Emin Effendi of Tokat and the painter, Levnee were the well-known Islamic personages of that I Mahmoud the First had just completed his 58 years of age at the time when he passed away, and he was committed into the mausoleum of his father next to the Yeni Djami (New Mosque) (May Allah have mercy upon his soul!)
The Sheikh Abd-ul-Ganee Nablousee, in 1144,in the Moslem Calendar: the calligrapher Seyyid Abdoullah Effendi, the chief of the reciters of the Glorios Qur'an and the Imam of Mohammad's maxims, Yousouph Effendizade were the notable Mussulman savants who died in that time.
