Sultan Osman han was born in Islambol. His mother, who was a very religious woman, did his best to bring him up well. He was very open-handed and very compassionate to the poor. He worked hard and learned calligraphy and wrote a good many of manuscripts. He traced the holy footprint of His Exalted Excellency Mohammed Moustapha (May Allah commend and salute him) and drew a Taughra ( ornamental monogram of the Ottoman Padishahs) near it and gave it to the Mausoleum of Eyub Sultan as a gift.
He was austre, quick-judging and nervous. He was extremely so much careful to women that he wore shoes whose heels were nailed so that women should enter their rooms whenever they heard the noise of the heels.
He was about in his 56 s at the time of his accession.
The significant events of his era were as follows:
In 1755, the Golden Horn froze, still in the same
year a big conflagration broke out and over half
the city suffered damage. A year after that, in the
second fire some four thousand buildings burnt
completely. The Mosque of Nourouosmaniye which
was made by Sultan Mahmoud han ( the First) was opened to public service in that time (in 1755).
Sultan Osman the Third departed when he was just over his 58 s. His body was interred next to Sultan Mahmoud in the yard of the New Mosque (May Allah have bless upon his soul!)
The chief of calligraphers, Hodja Mehemed Rasim Effendi of Eghrikam, the Sheikh Ekidji Mahomed Effendi were the eminent Muslem learned of his era.
He had no children.
