SULTAN SELIM THE THIRD

(1761 - 1808)

He was educated very well at the Imperial Palace. He was very fond of literature and calligraphy. Some inscriptions and handwritings inscribed by him were given to mosques and mausoleums to be hanged on their interior nails
He knew the Arabic and Persian Languages 'en well. He was very tender-hearted and polite.

Some important events which took place in his reign are as follows:
In 1791, two pacifications were signed: th Treaty of Sistova with Germany, and the Treat of Jassy with Russia.

In 1793. the military foundation of the Nizanmi Djidid (New Order) was formed.
In 1798, on Napoleon's invasion Egypt, a star broke out with France. In 1799, a treat} of alliance was signed with Russia and England. Djezzar Akhmed Pasha, who was the commander of Acre, defended against Napoleon and drove the French forces out of Egypt. To some pretensions. Napoleon accepted Islam in that era.
In 1801, the French troops had to abandon Egypt. In 1802, the Pacificaiton of Paris was concluded with the French Empire.

Again in these years, the absurd Sect of Wahabites (founded by Abd-ul-Wahab) arose in Arabia. The Wahabites invaded Mecca and Medina for three months. They insulted the graves of all the holy prominent Moslems and destructed them.
In 1806, the Serbian Revolution arose and the Russian—Ottoman War started.
In 1807, the Rebellion of Kabakclu broke out, and Selim the Third was deposed, and he was murdered a year after that when he was 46 years old (May Allah have mercy upon his soul!)

Seim the Third, who was very fond of his religion, country and people, was a poet at the same time. When Crimea was invaded by the Russians, he addressed the following sensitive hemistiches:

Do let us remain under the swords in such a way
Is it suitable for the Mussulmans to act so? They forced many a Tartars to surrender. Do we let us allow the Crimea be under the
dominion of Russia. Let me go and take my revenge on those
Russians. — Let me die for the sake of my country.
