SULTAN MAHMUD THE SECOND

(1785- 1839 )

Sultan Mahmud the Second had a good educa­tion, too. He was of 23 years age at his accession. He was an eminent personality whose training was in particular dealt with by Selim the Third.He was a calligrapher, composer and poet. He wrote poems under the pseudonym of Adlee. He had a brave. patient, resolute and dignified nature.
He formed a new military corps titled Sekban-i Djedid in place of the dispersed "Nizam-iDjedid.- Before long, when the rebels riled, he himself scattered that corps.
In 1808, the rebels slayed Alemdar Mustafa Pasha. In 1812, the Pacification of Bucharest was signed with the Russians.

In 1813, the Wahhabites who insulted the Holy Places at Mecca and Medina were killed, and thus they were made not to cause any troubles any longer.
In 1821, the Greek Rebellion broke out, and thousands of civilians were slaughtered..
In 1826, the Greek Rebellion was suppressed. The Janissary Corps was abrogated completely 1:)) a revolt of people. The chroniclers called that event "Vaktap-Hayriye" (the Good and Beneficial Occurance). In 1827, the Ottoman-Muscowite Warfare was commenced afresh. In 1829. the Treaty of Edirne was concluded.
In 1831 and 1839 the Egyptian Revolts broke out. In the month of July in the year 1839, he contracted tuberculosis owing to deplorable events against him and died of that illness. His holy corpse was interred into his tomb at Divanyolou (May Allah Have Mercy Upon His Soul!).

Sultan Mahmud the Second strived hard throughout his life time to accomplish somethings for his country in many fields. He established a large number of new schools, a lot of colossal buildings were constucted in his era, all the great mosques of Islambol were restored by his order. also the Unkaparn Bridge was erected in his reign­ing era; what is more, he had an Islamic School of Theology constructed at Mekke-ee Mukerreme (Holy Mecca) and Mesdjid-ee Aksa restored.
Sumbiilzade Velabee and Kechedji Zade Izzet Molla Effendi departed in that time.
He had fifteen sons whose names were Abd-ul­Medjid, Abd-ul-Aziz, four princes named Akhmed. Bayezed. Abd-ial-Hamid. Suleiman, Muhammed,Mon­rad. Nizam-ud-Din. Mehmed. Abdoullah. Osman.

He had twelve daughters called Emine Sultana. Hamide Sultana. 1-131.rie Sultana. Shah Sultana. Saliha Sultana. Aishe Sultana. Atike Sultana. Fa­tima Sultana. Mihrimah Sultana. Adile Sultana.
