SULTAN MURAD THE FIFTH

(1840 - 1904 )

He was taught by the prominent savants. He was occupied in poetry and prose-writing.

He was 35 years old at his accession. They, who deposed Abdulaziz, proclaimed murad the Fifth Sultan in his stead, but, when he sat on the throne, he proved hopelessly imbecile, and although he was taken to the most famous specialized doctors, he was not able to be cured. In his reign, the biggest crime of the ottoman History was committed: Hussein Avni Pasha, Mithat Pasha and their companions assassinated Sultan A bd-ul-Aziz bloodthirstily at the place of confinement in which he had been prisoned for fear that another rebellion might arise and he might be proclaimed Padishah again. Eleven days after that event, Binbashi Cherkez Hassan, the brother-in- law of the Sultan Abdul-Aziz, killed Hussein Avni, Rashid Pasha, the Minister of Foregn Affairs and an officer in a Meeting of the Cabinet. Thus, he took the vengeance of his brother-in-law from Hussein Avni.

The government was administered by Rushtu Pasha in that time, and meanwhile the greatest catastrophe, the Ottoman Russian War, was about to break out.
Amurath the Fifth set out on a Jounrey to Europe along with Abdul-Aziz, and came to know, in particular, France well. He spoke French very fluently. He loved musics. However, all his these abilities did not do any good when he was made Sultan. Since he was mentally ill, the leaders of the Empire had to depose him. He lived at the Chiraghan Palace till the end of his time. Some time after he was dethroned, he fully recovered from his mental sickness. The rest of his life passed in the Chiraghan Palace, and he passed away in that palace at the time when he was 64 years old.
He was interred into the tomb next to the New Mosque (May Allah have mercy upon his soul!)

His only son was Mehemed Salah-oud-Din, and his daughters were Fehime Sultana, Fatima Sultana and Hatidje Sultana.
